A longtime resident of Italy, I’m an American journalist covering art, fashion, travel, design, and Italian culture — a regular contributor to The New York Times, the central Italy correspondent for Monocle, and a contributing editor at Konfekt.
I’ve profiled artists working and exhibiting in Italy, including Maurizio Cattelan, Anselm Kiefer, Jenny Saville, Carsten Höller, Anish Kapoor, and Olafur Eliasson. In fashion, I’ve interviewed figures such as Matthieu Blazy, Brunello Cucinelli, Jeremy Scott, Riccardo Tisci, the Missoni family, and Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, alongside design luminaries like Rem Koolhaas, India Mahdavi, Formafantasma, and Luca Guadagnino on his work in interiors.
My travel reporting has taken readers from riding with the cowboys of southern Tuscany to touring Venice by boat, traversing the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, and exploring fantastical sites like the underground temples of a secretive commune — as well as deep into Italian city life through insider guides to Milan, Florence, Naples, Palermo, Cortina, and other destinations.
My writing has also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Wallpaper*, Elle, GQ, Vanity Fair, The Business of Fashion, the Michelin Guide, Afar, Kinfolk, New York, and elsewhere. I’m the author of two editions of the Wallpaper* City Guide to Milan and a co-author and editor of the Monocle Travel Guide to Milan. My articles for The New York Times have been highlighted on the front page and selected for Weekend Reads.
I’m currently based in Florence, after many years in Milan and a briefer stint in Lucca. Alongside editorial work, I collaborate with brands, the hospitality world, and cultural institutions to develop their narrative strategy and story.
